FASHION INSPIRATION, TRENDS & ADVICE

WOMEN   |   MEN   |   CHILDREN   |   HOMEWARE

MOST WANTED Hollywood Heroes 15 March 2018 From Harry Potter’s glasses to Dorothy’s red slippers: Hollywood’s most iconic kidswear continues to inspire, says Charlotte Duck It’s important not to underestimate the power of clothes to kids. Whether they dress up as their favourite superhero, Disney princess or Halloween witch, a costume is one of the ways little ones transport themselves to a make-believe world. Film-makers have long realised the impact an outfit has on forming a character in children’s minds. It’s been just over 25 years since Steven Spielberg created one of the most iconic images of the big screen: E.T wrapped in a blanket being cycled up into the sky by Elliott, who’s hidden too, underneath his favourite red hoodie. A pretty mundane piece of clothing for such an important scene you may think, but its selection is not accidental. The hoodie shows Elliott’s an ordinary boy, who just happens to have something extraordinary happen to him. Harry Potter’s iconic bottle-top glasses highlight his vulnerability and are forever getting lost or smashed. Somehow it wouldn’t be quite the same if he wore contacts. Whichever film character your child is into, our Character Shop has a selection of themed outfits and goods to delight the kids from Batman to Star Wars. Alternatively, go for one of the timeless classics below like the iconic Levi's denim jacket or Hermione Granger-style grey V-neck CHARACTER SHOP

Cinema-inspired classics for boys

Fashion is often used to represent the journey these young characters make during a film. When Mary Poppins arrives at the Banks’ household, her charges are dressed in stiff Edwardian garb, which quickly gets dirty once she introduces an element of fun (and a chimney sweep) to the household. Marty McFly spends much of the Back To The Future films whizzing back and forth in time so trainers are a must but, look closely, and you’ll see the brand he’s in changes depending on the decade. When he goes back to the Fifties, it’s classic Converse; when he heads into the future, he swaps them for hi-tech, self-lacing Nikes. Of course, the most famous shoes in film are Dorothy’s ruby slippers in the Wizard of Oz. The footwear transports her home when she clicks her heels together, but they also act as a device to show off the movie’s use of modern Technicolor. When Dorothy arrives in Oz, everything changes from sepia to colour with her ruby footwear the centrepiece. So, remember, when you’re next settling down for your next family film night, pay attention to the kids’ clothes on the screen – there’s much more than meets the eye.
