4 ways to modernise your living room

23rd December 2017

With so many exciting new trends to consider this season - including nature’s influence and the enviable corner sofa - it's hard to know which will add the most modern feel to your home. So, we've chosen our favourite modern-yet-timeless trends, to help you get the most out of your living room.

1. The Corner sofa

Think cosy, indulgent and spacious... And that's exactly why these sofas are at the top of so many wishlists. A corner sofa effortlessly creates that modern decor look and keeps you snug in front of a wood burner on a chilly evening. It's tricky to pick your favourite colour, so we'd keep it simple and choose a neutral palette such as off-whites and muted greys then add a colour pop with bold cushions. If subtle isn't your thing, be our guest, and opt for something beautifully bright - you can't go wrong.

2. Colourful artwork

Nothing says modern quite like the impact of head-turning colourful artwork. Time and time again these satisfying creations finish off a living room space in style, help enhance your mood and add something a little different and unique. French painter Pierre Bonnard perfectly summarises the impact colour makes to our habitats, 'Colour does not add a pleasant quality to design – it reinforces it.’ And we completely agree.

3. Accessories

Accessories for your home make a similar statement to those you wear. As Michael Kors put it "I've always thought of accessories as the exclamation point of a woman's outfit." And likewise the same goes when accessorising your home, because accessories very easily transform a dull space into a space you really, really want to spend time in. A sneak preview of home trends for 2017 include indoor plants for serenity (the greener the better), hints of gold for feelings of prosperity, plus patterned rugs and floral wallpaper to help combat any frosty mood.

4. Mood Lighting

With more and more studies proving that lighting can alter your mood, it should be a priority on your living room wish list. Dim lighting adds a modern kick and always intrigues, be it a subtle table lamp or a total lighting overhaul. You can create a room of positive energy at literally the flick of a switch. We'd choose a ceiling pendant for a subtle spread of light, a dimmer switch for total control and a floor lamp you can use as and when you like. For that ultimate mood enhancer opt for candlelight.
