STYLE OPINION

How to dress for a summer wedding

12 April 2018

Now that the days are officially a bit longer than they were a week or two ago, we’re getting hyped for summer. Cue some forward planning to get ready for summer wedding season.

As with most of life’s great occasions, there are a couple of important rules to follow in order to style it out as one of the best-dressed guests at the wedding. Fashion Features Editor India Gladstone guides you in the right direction...

The suit

It’s important to do your best to separate what you wear for weddings from what you wear to work. Step away from black suits (for now) and opt for something a little lighter – like grey. Choose something that looks as good dressed up as it does for more casual occasions (depending on the type of wedding), and always opt for a lightweight fabric for when the weather truly heats up.

CHOOSE YOUR SUIT

The shirt

The freedom you have with your choice of shirt will depend on the type of wedding – a more casual occasion will call for something bold and patterned (we’re into florals at the moment), but for a more formal situation you’re going to want to stick to classics like white, pale pink or light blue.

The tie

Some weddings won't require a tie, but for the ones that do, this is your opportunity to raise the bar. While you don’t want to go over the top, you can definitely afford to play with colours and patterns. Make sure that you’re never clashing tones or mixing colours too daringly – you don’t want to turn heads for the wrong reasons. Pastels perfectly complement each other, so use these as a starting point.

FIND THE TIE FOR YOU

The shoes

Loafers and boat shoes combine style and function for a summer wedding: keeping your feet cool both literally and figuratively. Suede is a great option for summer months as there’s little risk of you ruining the material, and always make sure you’re picking an opposing colour from your two-piece to avoid looking too put together.
