Ho, ho, ho: the nation's funny Google searches around Christmas time revealed

From illegal mince pies to rotating Christmas tree stands, we’ve taken a look at some of the funny things people are asking Google around the festive period. If you’ve ever looked online to find your local shop’s opening times on Christmas Day or the best way to wear a Christmas jumper on a night out – you’re not alone. We’ve put together a collection of the nation’s funniest Google searches in the run-up to Christmas.

For a “Fidgety” kind of Christmas...

In December 2018, 1,300 people searched for ‘is it Christmas yet’

Capturespave

We’re an impatient nation: over 3,000 people altogether searched for ‘is it Christmas yet’ and ‘how many seconds until Christmas’ last December alone. Some of us even took it back to basics entirely – with over 33,000 searches for ‘when is Christmas’.

This impatience is understandable – whether it’s the thrill of gift giving, the smell of stuffing wafting through the kitchen, or the

excitement of post-turkey charades, Christmas is a season to get excited about.

Some of us were seeking validation for dusting off the decorations several months in advance, asking Google ‘is October too early to decorate for Christmas’ almost 400 times between October 2018 and December 2018. While in December 2018 nearly 3,000 of us looked for tips on ‘how to get to sleep on Christmas Eve’.

For a “Foody” kind of Christmas…

In December 2018, 12,100 people searched for ‘is McDonald’s open on Christmas’

Capturespave

We’re a nation of foodies, so unsurprisingly deciding what to eat at Christmas time is a big deal. Aside from searches asking how to prep the turkey or Christmas pudding expiry dates, we’re also interested in alternatives to the traditional Christmas dinner.

In December 2018, 6,600 people searched for ‘Christmas dinner in a can’ (33% more than December 2017), perfect for those wanting to avoid peeling potatoes and chopping carrots this Christmas.

Meanwhile, some of us would rather avoid dinner preparations altogether, either refusing to host festivities or opting to eat out instead. In December last year 110 of us Googled ‘how to tell your family you’re not hosting Christmas’ (up 100% from the year before), while a whopping 12,100 of us asked ‘is McDonald’s open on Christmas’ (three times more than the previous year). McDonald’s isn’t the only cuisine we’ve searched for in past years, we were interested in a whole host of alternative Christmas options:

Nevertheless, presenter Emma Willis is a fan of traditional Christmas dinners – opting for a classic turkey roast.

For a “Party” kind of Christmas…

Capturespave

Christmas parties offer the perfect excuse to get dressed up and rescue the tinsel from the attic. Nevertheless, figuring out what to wear to a Christmas party can feel like a minefield (cue the Internet morphing into our own personal stylist).

A few of us are optimistic about December weather and reluctant to pack away our summer wardrobe, Googling ‘open toe shoes for Christmas party’. While others keep their festive season style casual and cosy, seeking advice on ‘how to wear a Christmas jumper on a night out’.

Meanwhile, some Christmas parties know no boundaries (or borders). In December last year just over 200 people searched for ‘can you take Christmas crackers on a plane’ – while other festive shindigs resulted in a little bit of post-party shame. 260 red-nosed Internet users searched for ‘embarrassed myself at Christmas party’ in December 2018, up 100% from the year before.

For a "Fancy" kind of Christmas...

Capturespave

Some of us spare no expense at Christmas time, going the extra mile and investing in rose gold decorations, diamond baubles and pearl garlands to make the festive period as fancy as possible. 1,600 people were clearly keen to impress with fancy tableware, searching for ‘most expensive Christmas crackers’ in December 2018.

This idea of a fancy Christmas extends into the living room too. Last December 390 people searched for ‘luxury pre-lit Christmas trees’ and 1,000 of us looked for ‘champagne Christmas trees’ in the same month. Meanwhile, some of us are so keen to show off every inch of our tree, asking ‘where can I buy a rotating Christmas tree stand’.

For a "Cosy" kind of Christmas...

Capturespave

The presence of cinnamon-scented candles, Nativity scenes and fairy lights all make Christmas one of the cosiest times of the year. To that end, many of us put plenty of thought into our Christmas decorations to make sure our surroundings have the ultimate ‘snuggle factor’.

However, cosy can mean different things to different people and there’s no ‘one size fits all’ when it comes to Christmas décor.

Some of us search for ‘roman Christmas décor’; others look for ‘whimsical Christmas mantel decorations’. Then there are those striving for the best of both worlds with ‘Halloween themed Christmas tree’, and those keen to forget the tree altogether and find ‘ways to decorate for Christmas without a tree’ (see our guide to quirky Christmas decorations).

But one thing is for sure, the presence of snow is something that always adds extra magic to the festive period.

In December last year, 1,000 of us asked the Internet ‘will I get a white Christmas’. What’s even more surprising is the fact that on average, at least 10 people (diehard fans of the festive period) search for this every single month of the year.

For a "Tiny" kind of Christmas...

In December 2018

5,400 people searched for

‘baby Christmas pudding outfit’

Capturespave

From musical Christmas jumpers to matching pyjama sets, Christmas is a time where anything goes, outfit-wise. It’s the only time of year when it’s acceptable to dress both ourselves and our tiniest of tots up in wonderful, whimsical outfits (and possibly the only time of year when it’s okay for someone to liken your baby to a Christmas pudding).

We’ve been taking to Google to look for some great Christmas baby outfit ideas:

Though ‘Christmas tree outfits for babies’ come below ‘puddings’ and ‘reindeers’ in terms of outfit popularity, tot-friendly ‘LEGO Christmas trees’ have remained consistently popular since December 2015, with over 2,000 people searching for them every December.

Meanwhile, over 8,000 of us Googled ‘baby’s first Christmas bauble’ in December 2018 and more than two dozen searched for tips on ‘how to keep baby away from Christmas tree’.

For a "Kindly" kind of Christmas...

Capturespave

Many of us turn to the powers of the Internet for gifting inspiration around Christmas time.

Aside from the typical ‘what to get my girlfriend’ or ‘what to get my dad’ questions, a few of us are more specific with our search queries – focusing on the hobbies or personality traits of our recipients to try and come up with the best present possible.

We look to the internet when dealing with pernickety family members, asking ‘what to get a picky mother in law for Christmas’ and ‘what to get a fussy friend for Christmas’. We search by profession too: ‘what to get a tech guy for Christmas’ and ‘what to get a nutritionist for Christmas’ and also by hobby: ‘what to get a crossfitter for Christmas’ – might we suggest taking a peek at our latest sportswear ?

Some of us face a near impossible task: ‘what to get a boyfriend for Christmas who has everything’ while others can’t figure out what they’d like themselves, with 18,100 of us asking ‘what do I want for Christmas’ back in December 2018.

We wonder what the nation will be searching for this year… will going to McDonald’s see a surge in popularity again and save a few Christmas dinners? Will rose gold decorations go out of style? Will a LEGO Christmas tree suddenly start appearing in every living room?

No matter who you’re celebrating with, what you’re eating, or how you’re planning to decorate – Next are here to cater for every kind of Christmas and ensure the festive season is one to remember.
