How to wear: printed shirts

1 August 2018

The comfort zone can be a wonderful thing, there’s no doubt about it. But you know what can be even more wonderful? Stepping outside it. So, if you’re one to consistently reach for dark, plain pieces during the colder seasons, there’s no time like the present to bounce off the summer sun with brighter prints.

Wearing these prints is all about consistency and balance. It’s not enough to wear one once and then return to your lair armed with shades as dark as they come. Equally, you need to be sure not to blind those close to you with clashing, opposing patterns. Keep the rest of your outfit calm, and the shirt will lead the way.

There is a plethora of options for every man, whether you lean towards more casual polo shirts or tend to reach for something slightly smarter like short-sleeved shirts and Oxfords. If this is your first foray into this side of the world, it’s a good idea to start slow and steady with more subtle designs and build up your wardrobe with bolder options over time.

Whatever you pick, pair your print with simple, neutral basics that you’ll already own, such as white T-shirts, dark chinos and bomber jackets, to ensure that all eyes are on the item in question. Style it out in the way that makes you feel most comfortable and let the print do the talking.
