STYLE OPINION

What to wear and where to go this summer

June 27 2018

It’d be hard to argue with the fact that a long, hot summer is the most anticipated time of year. Christmas is exciting, sure, but there’s nothing quite like the heat of the sun on your skin after a solid 12 months spent in sub-zero temperatures (if you live in England, that is).

Crafting the perfect summer holiday takes dedication, so don't fall at the last hurdle by not planning what you’re going to wear. Of course, the tone of your summer wardrobe will largely be set on whether you’re travelling near or far, to sandy beaches or into cities. To give you a head start, we’ve rounded up the most likely scenarios, alongside the clothes that’ll make you look – and feel – your best this summer.

SHOP ALL MENSWEAR

For a beach holiday

If you’re off to sun yourself in climes that’ll make your close circle green with envy, make sure you do it in style. Choosing the right swimwear, of course, is imperative, but what about outfits for days out or evening sundowners? Stay true to the climate you’re in by opting for brighter pieces and bolder patterns than you would at home, plus go-with-everything layers incase the sun goes in a little too soon. Think about the practical as well as the stylish by opting for lightweight linens and cottons and don’t forget the importance of amazing accessories, too.

For a city break

Whether you’re heading somewhere close to home or further afield, dressing for the city is perhaps the simplest of them all. This summer is all about mixing up pieces, pairing patterns with plain or combining different textures to create a streamlined look. Rather than packing for every eventuality and therefore exceeding your baggage limit before you’ve even got there, pick pieces that’ll work in a combination of different outfits. Shirts that’ll look good with jeans and chinos; shoes that can strike the smart/casual balance; accessories that go well with everything you’ve packed. Our favourite look this summer? A slick polo, tailored linen trousers and trainers.

For a summer staycation

Picking a summer staycation will not only keep your bang on trend, but it’ll also provide you a good opportunity to test the waters with some new pieces that you might not wear on average day. Colourblock t-shirts are massive news this summer, and are a great trend to try if you normally shy away from pattern or brighter shades. Raising the bar for a staycation is just as important as doing so if you were travelling abroad, so invest in bold colours, lightweight fabrics and killer accessories for a summer wardrobe that’s hard to beat.
