The trench coat
Here’s an investment piece that is future-proof. No one has ever regretted purchasing a winter trench coat – especially one that exudes quality craftsmanship, such as this premium Rejina Pyo version from our collaborative designer collection, Label/Mix. It’s all in the details, with sculptural buttons and a gorgeous contrasting cream and brown check on the cuffs – this is a coat that guarantees iconic appeal. Wear it now with stiff, straight denim and a bold knit (this is not a season to be afraid of colour), then have some fun with layering by throwing a heavy Crombie-style coat over the top as we transition into winter.

The micro bag
Handbags are a chance for us to get excited about the smaller things in fashion – and in AW18’s case, it’s the smaller the better. The mini bag trend has been around for several seasons and it’s showing no signs of waning just yet. Its USP is the carefree attitude that comes with it. With less chance to carry unnecessary extras, the mini bag provides a gateway to a more organised life. Our favourite? This timeless Kate Sheridan design, a key piece from Label/Mix’s latest collection. Wear it everywhere with everything.
The aviator jacket
Forget the notion that shearling-lined oversized coats are solely worn by gents at the races – this aviator jacket is your ultimate winter wardrobe staple. And in a rich tan hue, it guarantees to stand out against the sea of black cover-ups that forever dominate the colder months. How to wear it? Over midi dresses and knee-high boots for a cool Seventies vibe, or channel the art of effortless French dressing by keeping it simple with a neutral cashmere knit and skinny jeans. Basically, anything goes.
The statement earrings
Sequins, a bouncy blowdry and killer heels no longer define glamour today; sometimes all it takes is a standout piece of jewellery to make you feel "all dressed up." This clever accessory has the power to transform your look from casual to covetable in an instant even if you’re wearing a simple T-shirt and jeans. And it doesn’t have to break the bank. Consider these earrings the punctuation point of any outfit – in other words, it’s not finished until you’ve got a chandelier swinging from your ears.
The straight-leg jeans
Finally there is a jeans style that has as much mass appeal, if not more, than the skinny. The straight-leg jean has become the silhouette du jour – it’s the Jane Birkin if you like of denim: iconic yet effortless. Worn best with a heel as the most trend-worthy variation is designed to cover your ankles – that’s not to say you can’t still wear them with trainers, but use it as an opportunity to have fun with this season’s ‘Dad’ version with an elevated platform. Go for a mid-blue wash and take it easy – this is a jean that’s meant to look and feel relaxed.
Falling somewhere between the dress and the suit, the jumpsuit is our ultimate outfit of choice for autumn. It’s impossible not to look cool when wearing one, plus it requires minimum effort when it comes to styling – ideal for Monday mornings when getting out of bed is all the effort you can muster. Dress it up with pointed courts and a low ponytail for a look that works from 9am to 9pm, or layer it over a roll neck complete with this season’s Western boots to strike the ultimate smart/casual balance.
The velvet blazer
Relaxed luxury doesn’t get much better than a chic tailored blazer. Team a rich navy hue with tactile velvet and you have a piece of tailoring that works around the clock. Don’t be fooled into thinking you can only wear this fabric at cocktail hour – style with your favourite pair of jeans and a silk cami by day (it works to play up the texture contrast) and embrace the decadence that comes with blurring traditional dress codes. After dark, work a true Studio 54 vibe, either teaming the jacket with louche, wide-leg trousers or drape it over your shoulders with a shimmering slip dress.
The slouchy knit
A luxe knitted jumper is arguably the most inviting item in any winter capsule wardrobe. It’s a piece that truly celebrates comfort, but equally, won’t jeopardise your style credentials when wearing it. Take this gorgeous oversized design: it strikes the perfect balance of cosy indulgence thanks to the extra long sleeves and funnel neck (perfect for tucking your hair into for extra fashion points), while the graphic print takes it into modern territory. Wear with denim for days when casual simplicity rules – or spice it up with a tan midi skirt and knee-high boots to trial a new and more interesting silhouette and colour palette for the season ahead.
The little black dress
In the words of fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, “One is never overdressed or underdressed in a little black dress.” It is arguably the ultimate wardrobe icon, with a plethora of books and exhibitions dedicated to its name – and yet, it comes in so many different guises. For AW18, we’re voting louche velvet, a mini hemline and a universally flattering wrap silhouette. Paired with black sheer tights, metallic sandals and a red lip – it’s a look that celebrates its legendary appeal while keeping it contemporary. Wear this chic little number to every invite this party season, you won’t regret it.
The classic red lip
Building a capsule wardrobe shouldn’t exclusively come down to clothing and accessories. Make-up is equally as important and nothing more so than having the perfect red lip to bring a touch of glamour to any look. This season, it’s all about a vibrant, skin-brightening and mood-boosting poppy shade with a matte finish. To really nail the trend, take a less-is-more approach with the rest of the face, swapping bold eyes for a fresh, barely-there look. The key is to let your pout steal the limelight.
