GET THE LOOK

Dress like Frida

20 June 2018

As an exhibition of the personal belongings of iconic artist Frida Kahlo opens at the Victoria and Albert Museum, kidswear editor Maggie Davis looks at how your girl can emulate her distinctive look

‘Feet, what do I need you for when I have wings to fly?’ Frida Kahlo, the Mexican artist who lost part of her leg due to a bus accident, famously said. Born in Coyoacán, on the outskirts of Mexico City, in 1907, her vivid, often surreal imagery, poignant self-portraits and vibrant sense of style, made her one of the most influential artists of the last century. The Victoria and Albert Museum will be showing personal items including embroidered Mexican dresses, make-up and even a prosthetic leg complete with red leather boot belonging to the artist for the first time outside Mexico. Your girl can get in the spirit of things Frida with our joyous Mexican-inspired pieces including basket bags and embroidered dresses. As well as paying homage to the Mexican artist, these pieces work perfectly on holiday or at summer festivals too. Just add floral hair accessories and some grown-up clip-on earrings (and a slick of red lippy if she’s lucky). Voilà! That’s her next fancy-dress outfit sorted right there. Monobrow, optional.

Frida Kahlo: Making Her Self Up, is on at the Victoria and Albert Museum, Cromwell Road, London SW7 2RL, until 4 November 2018.
