SPOTLIGHT ON

California Modern

27 June 2018

With splashes of copper, geometric pattern and a hint of terrazzo, millennial pink takes centre stage this summer in the form of the California Modern trend. Pink is often associated with 'pretty' prints, but this season's take turns the shade into something more sleek and contemporary, and it's set to be the hottest summer look for home.

Interiors editor Rory Robertson handpicks the highlights and explains how to style it up.

Millennial pink, as it has been named, is the latest surprise colour to hit the interiors scene. For years this hue has been associated with nursery rooms and pretty floral prints but, with thanks to style destinations like London trendy restaurant Sketch, California Modern turns this tone into an entirely new look. By introducing elements of copper and geometric pattern, pink has suddenly been transformed into a new guise.

Think pink

The key here is to look specifically at the lighter side of the pink colour chart. Opt for softer tones, like Antique Rose, so that the room ends up displaying an element of calm and avoids being too brash or youthful. If you want to avoid decorating, then use accessories instead to introduce the shade, such as this Chevron Ceramic Vase. Consider adding masculine tones to create contrast like Midnight Blue or an earthy terracotta tone like Baked Clay. The addition of one of these contrasting shades will ultimately ground the pink and halt it from looking too darling.

Velvet furnishings

Consider going bolder when choosing fabric and furnishings and opt to inject pink into a room this way. We rather love the impact that the Stratus sofa has when upholstered in our soft Velvet Blush, or alternatively you might find the Blush Geo Flatweave Rug is a good route to bringing pink in, whilst also adding an extra layer of comfort under foot. Add to the California Modern trend by layering a selection of contemporary pink cushions like our Metallic Velvet Geo Cushion, or keep it pattern free with a plain Soft Velour Square Cushion. The trick to California Modern upholstery? Opt for pink velvet where possible to keep it luxe.

Moments of marble

When it comes to dining, add elements of luxury marble-look tableware such as the 12 Piece Rose Gold Marble Effect Dinner Set. Overlaid with a geometric pattern in rose gold, this set gives the table serious style factor.

Too glam? Then pair it back with a classic white marble aesthetic instead. Try adding Copper Effect Cutlery to complete the California Modern vibe.

Metallic finish

Add a seriously generous helping of warm copper and rose gold when recreating the trend at home. From ceiling pendants and floor lamps to wine glasses, this look isn't afraid of the Midas touch.

Metallic finishes, particularly in gold and copper shades, bring added warmth to the pale pink palette and allow California Modern to look fresh and contemporary. Right down to the finest details, we've even got your stationary selection covered so that your desk is on trend too. Our copper-look Desk Organiser will smarten you right up.
