Shoes that work for every occasion
6 March 2019
It's fair to say that out of all the components in your wardrobe, it can be easiest to overlook your footwear. Unless you happen to have your finger firmly on the fashion pulse, it’s likely that you buy a pair or two a year (perhaps one for work and maybe a couple for play), wear them to the ground until they’re physically falling apart and do the same thing all over again the following year. But if your shoes are the first thing a person notices about you (which apparently they are), it’s surely worth attempting to smarten up your act?
Making small but essential changes to your wardrobe need not be daunting, instead it’s all about starting with a couple of core pieces that can make up the backbone of your everyday wardrobe, no matter what type of occasions you regularly attend (or the type of job you do). When starting afresh, it’s good to strip back and take note of what you already have. Own three pairs of brown boots but consistently reach for black? Learn from it. Only ever wear low top trainers and haven’t touched a high top in years? Take heed and steer clear from the high tops.
The trick is to find pieces that will work for every occasion, no matter what day of the week, rather than choosing to spend chunks of money for one specific event just because your wardrobe isn’t filled with the right essentials from the get-go. In our eyes, every man should have a decent pair of trainers that can easily be smartened up with a suit or a pair of tailored trousers and shirt; a sturdy pair of brogues in a colour that’ll work with whatever you already own (black, brown or dark blue being your best bets); a timeless pair of boots (such as a simple brogue boot or a Chelsea boot) and, if the climate you live in calls for it, a classic pair of loafers. So go forth with your best foot forward, and let your shoes do the talking.
