Denim and a chic top: when it comes to outfit building it's hardly rocket science, but women of the Nineties knew a good and simple trend when they wore one. What became the prevailing go-to style combination for any night out has since become this season's easiest look to pull off, whatever the dress code. Here, senior fashion features editor Charlene Barton explains why this outfit formula never fails.

How many times have you asked or been asked the question: “What are you going to wear?” – only to receive or give the following response, “Oh, just jeans and a nice top.” It’s quick, simple and requires minimum effort, but the results are tenfold. Show me a woman in this failsafe outfit formula and I’ll immediately think, ‘There’s someone who is confident in their sense of style’.

And the best thing about this trend? It can be worn a myriad of ways and still tick the box. Be it a slinky 90s-inspired camisole and black skinny jeans, perfect for a night of dancing with friends, or a chic printed blouse paired with indigo denim that works just as well for the office as it does a weekend brunch.

The top in question could fit any brief: crisp white shirt, silky blouson, graphic T-shirt – anything goes. And it’s the same with the denim you pair it with, such as bootcut jeans that make your legs look amazing or a high-waisted crop to show off your delicate ankles. The key is putting together two pieces that make you feel confident – the compliments will come thereafter. No wonder then that some of the greatest street-style snaps are those of women storming the pavements in this very combination. Why? They feel comfortable yet secure in the knowledge that their look will never go out of style (and there’s also the smug aspect of knowing it took two seconds to pull together).

Complete with heels or flats depending on your mood – remember, flared hemlines always look best with a heel – add a pair of statement earrings et voilà, you’ve got a timeless look in a flash.
